Objectified

Adobe Photoshop & InDesign, 7 x 7 in, 2021

This poster series contains two contrasting images from the media, a sexist 1970's ad that reads "Keep Her Where She Belongs' and a cover for the rapper Megan Thee Stallion's single "Thot Shit" (2021). The topic concerns sexual assault culture and how women are objectified in the media. The artist dissected the two images and added text to display a message about this negative portrayal of women as well as their empowering reactions. The text used are parts of and/or the whole quote by Jan Van Toorn “Experience is seriously threatened by the common denominator of mass communication. The many-sidedness of human experience. That is why designers who are concerned by the corporate take-over of expression must first allow themselves sufficient room to maneuver for a dissident attitude vis-a-vis the normative determination of the media culture”.
