Unnatural Selection

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, & InDesign (posters), wood, acrylic sheet, styrene, paint, HVAC tape, LED light strips, silk polyester paper (light boxes), 27 x 40 in, 2022

Insects are invading and taking over the world. Who knew such a miniscule animal could be an apex predator? Africanized Killer Bees stalk their victims in a swarm for more than a quarter mile until they pierce the skin with venom, over and over. Spongy Moth Caterpillars hoard together in millions while tearing through trees with their voracious appetites, defoliating entire forests. Harlequin Lady Beetles will do anything to survive, including cannibalizing other ladybugs, especially the defenseless newborns. The insatiable curiosity and greed of humans is disrupting the natural course of mother nature through adverse interactions with invasive species.

Nature is a driving force in Savanna's work as its sublimity never ceases to intrigue her. She constantly observes the environment and questions every detail she comes across. While art practices have traditionally romanticized the natural world, Unnatural Selection highlights nature’s raw vengeance. Her work examines invasive insects through the trope of horror movie posters. At first glance these posters may appear fictional like typical displays at the cinema. With closer inspection, viewers will realize that these “invasions'' are reality, and we must come to terms with our responsibility in it.
